Dear Hiring Manager, HR Specialist, Director of whatever:
I wanted to talk to you specifically about the benefits of utilizing an external recruiter these days.
Many times you will think that because my budget is being cut or my organization has a policy not to use an external agency that it doesn't make sense for me to get a contract and rate for contingent services in place. In fact, you may feel its a waste of time. Be sure to know that its probably not the case. I work with many companies who have no budget and policies against using recruiters but find money in the budget for the right resource and break policy when it make business sense. But more importantly I wanted you to think about a few things the next time a recruiter calls or emails.
Reason 1. Competitive Advantage for you and your team
What if you wanted to buy a car and you were only able to buy a Ford? Nothing wrong with Ford. As a matter of fact the first car that I ever wanted was a Ford Mustang GT 5.0L.
But choice and competition is a good thing. By engaging an external recruiting agency (terms of engagement will be a topic for another day) you force your internal and external resources to compete with one another to find a better quality candidate for you and your team.
Reason 2. Its usually free for you to see the cards.
Like Texas Hold'em, its an all in proposition when you work contingently. External recruiters have to give you everything they have with no guarantee that the time and work they are putting into finding you what you need will end up in a placement. If there is no placement then there is no fee. But what you have done is validate that you've seen all the best people in the market now and have the right person join your team. And if you do end up paying a fee, its only because you have someone joining your team that should a great return on your investment (there are no sure things so you should make sure you have a replacement guarantee with the agency).
Reason 3. You Work for the "Evil Empire"
All kidding aside you work for a company or corporation that has one purpose usually, make money, as much as it can and more than the year before. You may love your company, your job and your coworkers. But the company does not love you back. It just wants you to do whatever you have to make $$$. As a hiring manager, you are probably more aware of this than those who work for you. As such, you are expendable. Sorry.
Look around see what is going on right now. If it makes sense for your company, they will let you go just like they did your friends last week or your mentor last month.
You are probably just thankful these days that you have your job. But that doesn't mean you should be overcome with any sense of security. You shouldn't be (Yes, this does apply to internal HR professionals as well).
By getting recruiting contracts in place with the company you work for today you are opening the door for many people like you, your friends and your mentor now and in the future.
If people are to help others these days we have to create opportunities where there a fewer these days. It just takes one person per company to get this done.
Pay it forward. It will work its way back to you.
That is of course unless you want your company to sign an exclusive agreement with me. ;)
